The 811-bed academic medical center and anchor hospital for UChicago Medicine is the hub of a rapidly growing academic health system. It combines nationally recognized clinical care, leading-edge research and medical education with the University of Chicago’s biological sciences division and the Pritzker School of Medicine. The work of over 200 physicians and scientists at its comprehensive cancer center, which is one of just two in Illinois, will be accelerated by AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion’s 575,000 square foot building. UChicago Medicine invests in Chicago’s South Side with new clinical laboratories and health-professions training facilities, strengthening connections of biomedical discovery, workforce development and patient care. Its 29 consecutive “A” hospital safety grades from The Leapfrog Group is achieved by only 11 hospitals nationally in every grading cycle since 2012, and the hospital has also earned its eighth “Top Teaching Hospital” designation. U.S. News & World Report‘s 2026-27 rankings placed it among the nation’s best in seven adult specialties, including No. 15 in cancer, No. 17 in obstetrics and gynecology, and No. 23 in gastroenterology and GI surgery. The medical center is affiliated with 12 Nobel Prize winners in physiology or medicine, and received $212.8 million in National Institutes of Health awards in fiscal year 2026. UChicago Medicine is the state’s first health system treating patients with histotripsy, a noninvasive procedure applying focused ultrasound waves to destroy liver tumors, and is among the first 30 in the U.S. offering tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte therapy for advanced melanoma. Cancer researchers partner with Argonne National Laboratory to use AI, machine learning and high-performance computing to accelerate discovery of therapies for drug-resistant cancer.
