UMass Memorial Medical Center is a nonprofit academic medical center with 905 licensed beds and a children’s hospital, serving as the clinical partner of UMass Chan Medical School. It operates the sole level 1 trauma center in Central and Western Massachusetts, and its emergency and trauma center is home to Life Flight, New England’s first hospital-based air ambulance and the only emergency helicopter service in Central Massachusetts, with more than 40,000 patient flights to date. The medical center serves as the region’s transplantation hub for liver, kidney, pancreas and bone marrow procedures, and its newborn ICU has earned international recognition. Its children’s hospital, the only one in Central Massachusetts, fields more than 200 medical and surgical experts across more than 30 specialties and houses the region’s only pediatric ICU and pediatric AIDS treatment facility. In 2025, UMass Memorial became the first level 1 trauma center in the U.S. to deploy “KATE,” an AI triage support system, expanding the technology across seven emergency departments systemwide, and researchers from UMass Chan Medical School and the medical center conducted the first U.S. study using the Mirai AI tool to prospectively predict breast cancer risk, screening 65,000 patients and flagging 4,000 high-risk individuals whose mammograms showed no suspicious signs. UMass Memorial was named to Newsweek‘s “World’s Best Hospitals” list for 2026.
