The Queen’s Medical Center was founded in 1859 and was originally known as Queen’s Hospital. With 575 acute care beds, it is the largest private, nonprofit hospital in Honolulu and has been on the cutting edge of healthcare advancements for more than 160 years. One of four hospitals in The Queen’s Health Systems, The Queen’s Medical Center serves as the major referral center for cancer, heart disease, neuroscience, orthopedics, surgery, emergency medicine and behavioral health. The medical center is home to the only organ transplant program in the state of Hawai’i and is the state’s first and only level 1 trauma center. The Queen’s Medical Center is also a major teaching hospital for the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine, serving as one of its largest clinical sites for medical students. In August 2026, the The Queen’s Medical Center’s emergency department was a recipient of the 2026 Emergency Nurses Association “Lantern Award,” the first and only hospital in Hawai‘i to do so.
