Providence Alaska Medical Center is the state’s largest hospital and a nationally recognized adult and pediatric trauma center, providing full-service, comprehensive care to Alaskans across the state. Providence’s roots in Alaska date back to 1902, when the Sisters of Providence first established healthcare there during the Gold Rush. Today, Providence serves Alaskans in six communities: Anchorage, Eagle River, Kodiak Island, Mat-Su, Seward and Valdez. Providence Alaska is the state’s largest private employer, with more than 4,000 full- and part-time employees working across the organization statewide. The hospital’s strategic plan publicly commits to patient safety as a core value, including a goal of “zero preventable harm.” Providence Alaska Medical Center recently became the first in the state to offer a breakthrough treatment for a complex group of cancers that can develop in the pancreas, stomach, intestines, and other parts of the digestive system. In addition, it achieved accreditation from the Surgical Review Corporation as a center of excellence in robotic surgery. U.S. News & World Report ranked Providence Alaska Medical Center No. 1 in Alaska for 2026-27.
