Oregon Health & Science University Hospital is Oregon’s only public academic health center. It’s a level 1 trauma center that combines patient care, biomedical research and medical education. OHSU operates a system of hospitals and clinics across Oregon and southwest Washington, and its schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and public health extend through a network of campuses and partners throughout the state. As Portland’s largest employer and a statewide economic engine, the hospital also serves as a national research hub, with thousands of scientists working to develop lifesaving therapies. U.S. News & World Report ranked OHSU the No. 1 hospital in Oregon for 2026-27. Additionally, four of OHSU’s adult specialties rank among the top 50 nationwide, including ophthalmology and cancer care, which both rank in the top 25. As a public organization, OHSU also provides services for the state’s most vulnerable residents and outreach to improve health in communities across Oregon. OHSU was the first center in Oregon to offer high-intensity focused ultrasound for treatment of tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor, and was one of the first centers in the country to perform a new type of brain procedure to treat an intractable form of epilepsy.
