Consistently recognized as a national leader in safety, quality and patient experience, Inova Fairfax Hospital received “A” grades from The Leapfrog Group for 16 consecutive periods and CMS’ highest 5-star overall quality rating for nine consecutive years. The hospital ranks No. 2 in Virginia and in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area by U.S. News & World Report for 2026–27, including national rankings in obstetrics and gynecology. Its L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital also ranks for neonatology, operating as the home of Virginia’s only level 4 neonatal ICU. The 928-bed campus is the largest hospital in the Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. region. Home to Northern Virginia’s only level 1 trauma center, it is the nation’s fourth busiest emergency department, with nearly 185,000 annual visits, and a $161 million expansion that will add capacity and improve access, patient flow and timely care. The adult emergency department has the region’s first “EmPATH” unit, a behavioral health model offering rapid assessment and stabilization for patients experiencing a mental health crisis in a therapeutic environment. In 2026, Inova Fairfax performed the region’s first histotripsy procedure for liver tumors and added new GE HealthCare MRI technology to advance AI-enabled cardiac imaging. The campus opened a new $20 million donor care unit, the dedicated organ recovery center serving Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland. Meanwhile, the broader Inova system is the first health system in Virginia and Mid-Atlantic to use advanced fluorescent imaging during ovarian cancer surgery.
