The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, a cornerstone of Penn Medicine, combines advanced science with patient-centered care and is a hub for biomedical discovery and innovation. Founded as the nation’s first university-owned teaching hospital, it has spent over 150 years translating knowledge into better treatments and outcomes. Closely linked with the Perelman School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania, it moves promising insights from the laboratory to the bedside while training the next generation of health professionals. The hospital includes the Clifton Center for Medical Breakthroughs, a 1.5 million-square-foot, 17-story facility that is the largest capital project in university history. The center houses inpatient care for cardiology and cardiac surgery; medical and surgical oncology; neurology and neurosurgery; thoracic, vascular, and transplant surgery, and two-story emergency department. An advanced epilepsy monitoring unit and human neurophysiology research laboratory strengthen the connection between neuroscience research and neurological care. The Penn Transplant Institute, with 60 years of changing lives through organ donation and transplantation, performed over 15,000 solid-organ transplants since its founding as the region’s largest transplant center. With a long record of medical firsts, Penn Medicine teams helped shape modern healthcare, from CAR T cell therapy to the Nobel Prize-winning mRNA technology behind Covid-19 vaccines. Since 2013, researchers made essential contributions through foundational research and clinical trials to at least 55 FDA approvals. Penn Medicine is a $12.5 billion enterprise powered by more than 50,000 faculty and staff.
