Secretary Sebelius encouraged all state policymakers to expand health insurance coverage for low-income individuals, telling those at the meeting “no one’s healthcare should be determined by their ZIP code,” according to the report.
State governments have the option of expanding their Medicaid programs under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Secretary Sebelius mentioned Arkansas and Iowa as two states exploring unique methods for extending coverage for the poor.
During a visit to Austin, Texas, last week, Secretary Sebelius delivered a similar message, saying the federal government is open to working with Texas to expand Medicaid in a way unique to the state’s needs. Texas policymakers are not currently engaged in any discussions with HHS concerning Medicaid expansion.
