NFL Won't Back PPACA Ad Campaign

The National Football League, after warnings from Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas), has rejected HHS' plea for help in recruiting the public to enroll in plans on the health insurance exchanges, according to a report by Politico.

HHS has reached out to several professional sports leagues seeking their assistance to its marketing campaign aimed at informing the public about the federal healthcare law. Polls have shown the majority of Americans have limited or no understanding of the health insurance marketplaces in the law, and perception of the law as a whole tends to be negative.

The two senators last week sent letters to professional sports league commissioners and executives, saying supporting HHS in its public awareness efforts "would risk damaging [the leagues'] inclusive and apolitical brand," given the law's "divisiveness and persistent unpopularity."

The NFL is so far the only sports league to announce publicly it would not participate.
