Federal Workers' Health Premiums to Increase 3.7% in 2014

The average premium rate for people covered by the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program will go up by 3.7 percent in 2014, up slightly from last year's 3.4 percent rate increase, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

On average, FEHB Program enrollees will pay $3.28 more per bi-weekly pay period for self-coverage and $7.90 more for family coverage in 2014. There will be no significant benefit changes, although the number of plan choices will increase by more than 10 percent to 256, according to the OPM.

The average premium increase for dental benefits for federal employees will be less than 1 percent, and enrollees will see a 1.3 percent decrease in premium rates for vision benefits. Premiums for Health Maintenance Organizations will go up by an average of 6.5 percent, while premiums for fee-for-service plans will increase by 3.1 percent on average.

The FEHB Program is the largest employer-sponsored health insurance plan in the country, covering 8.2 million people, according to the OPM.
