Zika case count in US tops 3,000; more than 700 pregnant women infected

While Alaska remains Zika virus-free, the total number of Zika cases in the other states and Washington, D.C., reached 3,176 on Sept. 14, according to the most recent CDC report.

Of those, the CDC reports 43 were acquired by mosquitoes in Florida. However, numbers from Florida Department of Health indicate there were 77 locally acquired Zika cases in the state as of Sept. 15. Right now, Florida is the only state where mosquitoes are transmitting the virus.

Additionally, as of Sept. 8, 731 pregnant women in the U.S. had laboratory evidence of possible Zika infection, according to the CDC. The infection is especially troublesome for pregnant women, as it can cause the birth defect microcephaly.

Meanwhile, in the U.S. territories, there are a total of 17,694 Zika cases as of Sept. 14, and 1,156 pregnant women in the territories had evidence of an infection as of Sept. 8.
