Yale freshman previously infected with bacterial meningitis back in hospital

In what appears to be a recurrence of the initial bacterial meningitis infection, a freshman from Yale University in New Haven, Conn., previously treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital has been hospitalized again, this time out of state, according to Yale Daily News.

Paul Genecin, MD, director of Yale Health, alerted the Yale community of the situation on Friday. Yale students are currently on spring break. Dr. Genecin wrote, "While the risk to the campus community is low, as a precautionary measure the university and local and state departments of health have begun identifying and reaching out to those who had close, extended contact with the student just prior to spring break in order to offer preventative treatment."

Dr. Genecin added that though the student is very ill, there are signs of improvement, writing "we are hopeful that there will be a full recovery."
