US flu activity at lowest point in 5 months

During the week of April 17 though April 23 — week 16 of the 2015-16 flu season — the national proportion of outpatient visits for flu-like illness dipped below the baseline average for the first time in months, according to CDC data.

The national baseline for flu-related outpatient visits is 2.1 percent. During week 16 of the current flu season, levels fell to 2 percent of outpatient visits. Four influenza-associated pediatrics deaths were reported during the week, bringing the season’s total to 60.

Although there are a few weeks left in the current flu season, at peak incidence, the rates of flu activity fell below those of the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.
