Roberto Gonzalez, a paralyzed Vietnam War veteran — who his wife says is one of Texas’ only licensed handicapped horse trainers — was in the hospital for a back wound when he found out his kidneys and liver were failing, according to the report.
He had spent 30 to 40 years training and raising horses, so it didn’t come as a surprise when he asked to see his horses one last time. Mr. Gonzalez also happened to be one of the hospital’s first patients when it opened in 1974, so the staff was happy to oblige his request, according to the report. Ringo and Sugar were brought 150 miles to see Mr. Gonzales and said their goodbyes outside the hospital, according to the report.
