Additionally, health officials reported 26 probable mumps cases related to the outbreak. Most of the cases have occurred among the university’s lacrosse team. The university has discontinued the team’s activities for the remainder of the semester.
Mumps can cause painful, swollen salivary glands. It is a highly communicable virus contracted via person-to-person contact. Two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine are 88 percent effective at preventing mumps, according to the CDC.
