Study: Robotic Surgery Checklist Cuts Readmissions 74%

A robotic safe-surgery checklist can reduce readmissions among patients undergoing minimally invasive robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery, according to a study by researchers at Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health System.

Summa Health System researchers developed a Robotic Operating Room Computerized Checklist based on the World Health Organization Safe Surgery Saves Lives Checklist to enhance safety and communication during robotic-assisted surgery. The researchers measured 30-day readmissions before the checklist was implemented by analyzing data on patients undergoing gynecologic procedures at Summa Akron (Ohio) City Hospital from November 2010 to May 2011. Post-checklist data was abstracted from patients undergoing the procedures from May 2011 to November 2011.

The readmission rates for robotic GYN surgery decreased 74 percent after the checklist was implemented, according to the news release.

The research was selected for a poster presentation at the 61st Annual Clinical Meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in New Orleans May 4 to 8.
