Study: Perioperative Nurses Identify Top 10 Safety Issues

A study published in AORN Journal reveals the results of a survey of 3,137 perioperative nurses to identify their highest priority patient safety issues. While differences were found among different practice settings, the authors were able to isolate the nurses’ 10 highest priority issues, which include:

•    Wrong site/procedure/patient surgery
•    Retained surgical items
•    Medication errors
•    Failures in instrument reprocessing
•    Pressure injuries
•    Specimen management errors
•    Surgical fires
•    Perioperative hypothermia
•    Burns from energy devices
•    Difficult intubation/airways emergencies
