Researches tested microbial contamination on both disposable and reusable eyewear used in ORs. Directly after use, 37.7 percent of disposable eyewear and 94.9 percent of reusable eyewear had microbial contamination.

However, after disinfection of reusable eyewear, their percentage contamination only dropped 20 percent.
Researchers concluded eyewear may be creating an ongoing risk of contamination in ORs, and either use of disposable eyewear or better disinfection of reusable eyewear could reduce infection risks.
