For instance, here are infection rates for the largest hospital in the state, Greenville (S.C.) Memorial Medical Center:
• Greenville Memorial had three surgical site infections with a risk index of 1 (out of 3), indicating a 3.26 SSI rate, for all coronary bypass graft procedures with both chest and donor incisions.
• The hospital also had two surgical site infections with a risk index of 1, indicating a 3.39 SSI rate, for all hip prosthesis procedures. These and coronary bypass graft procedures saw the highest SSI rates.
• Greenville Memorial experienced two central line bloodstream infections in its level III nursery, indicating a 4.9 CLABSI rate based on number of central line days. This location of the hospital had the highest CLABSI rate.
• During the data collection period, the organization had seven infection control practitioners, who spent 175 hours a week performing surveillance and 65 hours a week on other infection control activities.
