South Carolina Lists Infection Rates by Hospital Size

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control released a list of healthcare-associated infections that occurred at state hospitals from Jan.-June 2011.

The hospitals are listed by number of beds, and each hospital report includes separate analyses of surgical site infection and central line-associated bloodstream infection rates as well as details on infection control activities. For instance, here are infection rates for the largest hospital in the state, Greenville (S.C.) Memorial Medical Center:

•    Greenville Memorial had three surgical site infections with a risk index of 1 (out of 3), indicating a 3.26 SSI rate, for all coronary bypass graft procedures with both chest and donor incisions.
•    The hospital also had two surgical site infections with a risk index of 1, indicating a 3.39 SSI rate, for all hip prosthesis procedures. These and coronary bypass graft procedures saw the highest SSI rates.
•    Greenville Memorial experienced two central line bloodstream infections in its level III nursery, indicating a 4.9 CLABSI rate based on number of central line days. This location of the hospital had the highest CLABSI rate.
•    During the data collection period, the organization had seven infection control practitioners, who spent 175 hours a week performing surveillance and 65 hours a week on other infection control activities.

Similar analyses can be found for other South Carolina hospitals here.
