Sacred Heart University publicly announces month long mumps outbreak

On Wednesday, Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., publicly announced a mumps outbreak that was identified by officials on March 22.

"A few days after spring break we had two cases, then another, then two more came up positive," Larry Wielk, Sacred Heart's dean of students, told the CT Post. As of Wednesday, there have been 17 suspected and eight confirmed cases at SHU. The latest case was identified the week of April 18.

Sacred Heart University isn't the only school in New England battling the highly infectious disease: The mumps have also been a persistent thorn in the side of health officials at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., where an outbreak has infected 40 students since March.
