Riley Children's Hospital teams up with Indianapolis Colts to lower infant mortality rates

Indianapolis-based Riley Children's Hospital at Indiana University Health and the Indianapolis Colts are partnering to provide sleep sack swaddles to parents of newborn children in order to reduce the state's high infant mortality rate, according to WIBC news.

The collaboration aims to help reduce sudden infant death syndrome, one of the top three causes of infant death in Indiana and across the country.

"What a sleep sack is, it's basically a wearable blanket but it secures snuggly around the baby and keeps loose blankets from getting in the baby's face," said Kim Schneider, MD, a physician at Riley Children's Hospital. "That way when they're sleeping, they don't have to worry about suffocating. So it keeps the baby warm, safe and feeling secure."

Ms. Schneider said the initiative will last approximately two years, until IU Health hospitals need to restock the sleep sacks.
