Readmission more likely for low socioeconomic heart failure patients, study finds

Lower neighborhood socioeconomic status was significantly associated with six-month all-cause hospital readmission for patients with heart failure, according to a study published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.

Researchers analyzed data from participants of the Telemonitoring to Improve Heart Failure Outcomes trial and examined the association between neighborhood socioeconomic status and outcomes of patients with heart failure. The researchers also conducted patient interviews and medical chart reviews. The analysis included 1,557 patients from low, medium, and high socioeconomic status neighborhoods.

The study found that 47.8 percent of the heart failure patients had at least one readmission and 11.5 percent died. When compared with patients in high socioeconomic status neighborhoods, those living in low-socioeconomic status neighborhoods were more likely to be readmitted, but the mortality rates were not significantly different.
