In an op-ed penned for The Gazette, Mr. Norris argues that Iowa would have to cover $340 million annually in Medicaid costs after the AHCA’s cuts, which would force the state to either cut Medicaid, raise taxes or make cuts to other programs. Not only will Medicaid recipients suffer, says Mr. Norris, but the 50,000 Iowans on the ACA marketplace would face large increases in payment costs.
The state’s oldest citizens would bear the brunt of AHCA changes, according to Mr. Norris, and could see their healthcare plans cost as much as five-times what younger residents pay.
These changes would also force many residents away from primary care physicians and into ERs, which Mr. Norris points out are the most expensive care options. Though Mr. Norris is against passage of AHCA, he does not specify what changes he would like to see in the ACA as an alternative.
