US measles cases on track to double 2024 tally: 6 updates

Measles activity continues to rise across the U.S., with nearly 500 cases confirmed as of March 27, CDC data shows.

Six things to know:

1. The CDC has confirmed 483 measles cases in the first three months of 2025, up from 285 total cases in 2024.

2. Five measles outbreaks have been reported this year, accounting for a majority of cases. Health officials in Texas — the state with the largest largest outbreak — reported 400 cases as of March 28.

3. While most cases are tied to Texas’ outbreak, 19 states have reported cases this year:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • New York State
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Vermont
  •  Washington

4. About 97% of cases have involved people who were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status.

5. Fourteen percent of cases have required hospitalization, and 25% of those hospitalized have been children. 

6. Health officials have confirmed one measles death this year and are investigating a second suspected death.
