Physicians report uptick in children with worsening eyesight

Some ophthalmologists are seeing an uptick in new or worsening cases of myopia, or nearsightedness, among children, The Wall Street Journal reported June 1.

More screen time amid the COVID-19 pandemic is likely a large factor behind the increase in myopia rates and cases of digital eye strain, according to the report.  A study published in JAMA Ophthalmology,, for example, found myopia rates among children aged 6 to 8 in China rose by up to three times amid the pandemic compared to the last several years.

The eye adjusts to accommodate a closer focus when kids look at screens or books for a prolonged period of time, which may affect the eye’s shape — a possible explanation behind the rising myopia rates, experts said.

The trend has been more prevalent among children in comparison to adults because eye growth normally stabilizes after childhood, WSJ reports.
