Hospital officials said the fire started around 7:30 p.m. at SumHospital in the city of Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India. Officials said they suspect the fire started because of an electrical short circuit.
According to a New York Times report, the dean of the Institute of Medical Sciences, which is affiliated with the hospital, said he believed the patients died from carbon monoxide inhalation. He claims injured patients were taken to local nearby hospitals.
Three hospital officials, including the manager of the facility, haven been suspended, according to the Times of India report.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express is anguish over the situation and to express his condolences to the victims’ families.
