Hospital authorities notified police about the injuries last week. The hospital has not disclosed the types or number of injuries that occurred in the NICU, citing patient privacy laws.
Meriter told Becker’s it is updating families involved with the incident and cooperating with the ongoing investigation. So far, no arrests have been made, but the hospital did suspend one employee, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
“Nurturing and protecting the health of our patients is our highest priority, so we were heartbroken to recently learn of patient safety concerns regarding some of our youngest patients,” Meriter said in an official statement emailed to Becker’s. “As the police investigation continues, we continue our own internal review and have implemented supplemental monitoring and security measures to enhance supervision in our newborn intensive care unit until the investigation is complete. We will continue to cooperate with all appropriate agencies and will do all we can to bring about a swift and appropriate resolution.”
