Pennsylvania hospitals reduce HAIs by 7%

From 2009 to 2014, hospitals in Pennsylvania reduced healthcare-associated infections by 7 percent and saved at least $138 million, according to a report from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: 22 percent decline (2009 to 2014)
  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections: 8 percent decline (2009 to 2014)
  • Surgical site infections: 4 percent decline (2013 to 2014)

In addition to reducing HAIs, hospitals in Pennsylvania saw a 37 percent decrease in all-cause harm and a 26 percent decrease in preventable readmissions.

The state also saw a 173 percent increase in the number of hospitals that attained employee flu vaccination rates of more than 90 percent since the 2011-2012 flu season.
