Patients Reluctant Participants in Hand Hygiene Reminders for Healthcare Workers

A study published in the 2013 supplement of Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control found that patients are less likely than healthcare workers to agree with the concept of a patient role in healthcare worker hand hygiene.
The study was conducted through self-administered surveys in a 2,200-bed academic hospital.

Patients who were exposed to a patient participation program were no more likely to agree with a patient's role in the program than were patients who were not exposed. In addition, while 67 percent of healthcare workers accepted the idea of patients reminding healthcare workers about hand hygiene, only 55 percent of patients felt the same way.

Healthcare workers who agreed with a patient role in hand hygiene were more likely either to have been exposed to a patient participation program or to be nurses.
