The guidelines aim to reduce the use of Foley catheters and also prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
The new guidance is more detailed than the guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2009 and includes criteria for choosing between three types of urinary catheters: indwelling Foley catheters, in-and-out catheters and external catheters for men. It also addresses when a patient could be managed without a catheter, thus eliminating the chance of a CAUTI.
