The Iowa City-based system uses CertaScan to scan newborn footprints and their mothers’ fingerprints, which are then saved in EHRs. IU Health Care began using the technology more than a year ago, according to a Feb. 26 news release

IU Health Care’s Medical Center Downtown recently implemented the technology in its neonatal care services to improve infant identification and overall patient safety.

“This type of technology, while we hope never to need it, could serve a vital purpose in identifying a missing child,” Christian Pettker, MD, chair and department executive officer of obstetrics and gynecology, said in the release.
