A University of Cincinnati researcher launched an app, called High Enroll, to connect patients to clinical trials.
The most common barrier to human subject research is a lack of awareness. Many clinicians are often unaware of all of the trials at their hospitals, which can mean missed opportunities matching patients to potential new therapies.
“One of the biggest challenges we face in clinical research is finding the people to participate – whether the study is about diets, exercise, medications, vaccines or surgeries,” Dylan Steen, MD, a cardiologist and adjunct associate professor at the University of Cincinnati’s division of cardiovascular health and disease, and inventor of the app, said in a May 6 system news release. “It’s about increasing visibility and making participation more accessible for everyone involved.”
Dr. Steen and his colleagues used UC’s 1819 Innovation Hub, a launch pad for entrepreneurs, to create their app.
In addition to the University of Cincinnati, the app is being used at UC Health, the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as at other hospitals in 24 states, according to the release.
