A Department of Veterans Affairs employee was shot March 17 at Pickens County VA Clinic in Jasper, Ga., and died March 18.
Nicholas Crews, 34, of Marietta, Ga., was shot while working as a social work care manager at the clinic, according to a March 19 news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Lawrence Michels, 51, of Jasper, was at the clinic for a walk-in mental healthcare consultation when he shot Mr. Crews around 1:30 p.m. March 17. Mr. Michels was shot by law enforcement and died at the scene, the GBI said.
Mr. Crews was taken to a trauma hospital, where he died March 18, according to the GBI.
The clinic remained closed for the rest of the week pending an investigation led by local authorities with assistance from the VA’s Office of Inspector General, a VA spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker’s on March 18.
“VA is rescheduling appointments as necessary and ensuring Veterans and staff have access to counseling and chaplain services in the wake of this tragic event,” the spokesperson said.
