Ohio left with one Ebola treatment center after UTMC drops designation: 3 things to know

The University of Toledo (Ohio) Medical Center will no longer be a designated regional Ebola treatment center, according to The Blade.

Here are three things to know about the decision.

1. UTMC confirmed the decision but did not disclose many details surrounding it. "The executive council has determined that UTMC will no longer serve as the designated regional Ebola treatment center," Barbee Daniel, UTMC' s vice president of clinical services, wrote in an email, according to The Blade."We still have an obligation to train and drill to care for these patients as we could potentially receive them, but we will not be the tertiary center receiving transfers," the email said.

2. Although UTMC will no longer be a designated Ebola treatment center, Meghan Cunningham, UTMC spokeswoman, said the medical center would maintain "its robust preparedness program to ensure hospital personnel are ready to provide care should a patient suspected to have Ebola virus disease be admitted to the hospital," according to The Blade.

3. The decision leaves MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland as the only Ebola treatment center in Ohio. There are still multiple Ebola assessment hospitals in Ohio, which agree to hold a patient who could have Ebola and care for them until an Ebola diagnosis can be confirmed or ruled out and until discharge or transfer is completed. These assessment hospitals include Lima, Ohio-based St. Rita's Medical Center and ProMedica Toledo (Ohio) Hospital.
