NYU Langone Medical Center Publishes Quality Report on Orthopedics

NYU Langone Medical Center has released a 62-page report on quality and patient safety efforts in its orthopedics department.

This is the department's second annual analysis of quality and patient satisfaction data for orthopedic procedures at the hospital and represents collaborative efforts across the entire medical center to identify, evaluate and enhance the quality of care. The outcomes data is measured against benchmarks established by internal medical center quality teams and the University Health System Consortium, an alliance of 115 academic medical centers and their affiliated hospitals.

Areas of focus include the prevention of venous thromboembolisms, prophylactic control of MRSA prior to surgery, shortening patient length of stays and decreasing overall readmission rates, among others.

One study assessed a hospital-wide initiative to decrease flash sterilizations during implant procedures. The initiative relied on nursing staff to write incident reports every time a flash sterilization occurred to determine what factors (preventable or non-preventable) contributed to the event. Analysis of these reports helped hospital administration implement new policies to prevent flash sterilization from occurring. From 2008-2009, the rate of preventable flash sterilizations decreased by nearly 50 percent. One major cause of flashing was holes in wrapped containers, leading administrators to purchase reusable containers.
