Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Hospital has exceeded its goal of hiring 90 nurses in 90 days.
Mission Health has added approximately 400 hires since January and participated in nearly 40 recruitment events over the last three months as part of broader efforts to stabilize staffing and patient care, according to a May 4 hospital news release.
Mission Health said it is also investing in workforce development programs to train medical assistants, certified nursing assistants and imaging staff to support longer-term staffing needs.
The hiring push comes as the hospital, which is part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, has faced scrutiny over staffing levels, workforce turnover and patient safety, including multiple immediate jeopardy citations from CMS in recent years. Physicians and nurses have cited high patient volumes, staffing shortages and burnout, with recent reports noting continued turnover among specialists.
Mission Hospital most recently had its immediate jeopardy status lifted in March after federal regulators cited patient care deficiencies tied to multiple incidents, including failures in timely treatment and monitoring.
Despite the designation being removed, the hospital remains out of compliance with some Medicare conditions of participation and must demonstrate sustained improvements to maintain its provider agreement.
