North Shore-LIJ Introduces Video Auditing of Surgical Time Outs

Great Neck, N.Y.-based North Shore-LIJ will expand its remote video auditing system into operating rooms to reduce wrong-site surgeries and monitor OR cleanliness.

Currently used to monitor hand hygiene compliance, the use of the video auditing system in the OR will be the first time the technology has been used in a surgical setting in the U.S. The RVA will ensure that the surgical team takes a "time-out" before each surgery to help prevent wrong-site surgeries. The technology will also help alert the cleaning crew when a procedure is almost finished to help minimize the time between cases, and will monitor the cleaning to ensure it meets patient safety standards.

The program is already in place at North Shore-LIJ's Forest Hills (N.Y.) Hospital. "The initial focus at Forest Hills has been on monitoring for surgical timeout compliance, and within just one week of receiving real-time performance feedback, our operating room teams achieved nearly perfect scores," said Rita Merceica, RN, the hospital's executive director, in a news release.
