Newly Discovered Antibiotics Tough on MRSA

U.S. researchers have discovered a new class of antibiotics effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, according to research in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The antibiotics, oxadiazoles, were discovered at the University of Notre Dame (Ind.) through computer screening and were isolated from approximately 1.2 million tested compounds, according to a report from Chemical and Engineering News.

In tests with rodents, the antibiotics appeared to be effective when taken orally, according to the report.
