Four outbreak updates:
1. The CDC reported 880 measles cases nationwide as of May 17. This figure is nearing the 963 cases reported in 1994 — the highest annual total seen in the last 25 years, reports CNN.
2. Of the 41 new cases last week, 30 occurred in New York. The state is facing two large measles outbreaks, primarily in Orthodox Jewish communities.
3. Oklahoma also reported its first measles case last week, bringing the total number of states with confirmed cases to 24, reports NBC News.
4. A CDC spokesperson told NYT it’s still too early to assess whether the outbreak is slowing. Other health officials noted measles transmission typically decreases in the summer months.
