Mumps reported at Penn State

Two cases of the mumps have been confirmed among students at Penn State University in State College, Pa., according to university health services.

University health officials are encouraging students to check their vaccination records to ensure proper immunization against the virus. Students without proof of vaccination may be barred from entering campus for up to 25 days after the last possible date of infection.

Mumps is a highly transmissible disease passed through saliva and respiratory secretions. Symptoms include tender swollen glands below the ear on one or both sides of the face, headache, fever and other cold-like symptoms.

Two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine are 88 percent effective at preventing mumps, according to the CDC.
