The EEE case marks one of three confirmed in the state this year. Two other cases are still under investigation.
The death comes one month after Massachusetts reported the state’s first human case of EEE since 2013. Since then, health officials have confirmed six additional cases.
EEE virus is spread by mosquitos and can cause a rare, sometimes fatal brain infection in humans. The U.S. typically sees about seven human cases of EEE each year, 30 percent of which are fatal, according to the CDC.
