Miami Transplant Institute performs rare 5-organ transplant

A 30-year-old woman received a five-organ transplant from the Miami Transplant Institute at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Dec. 4, according to the Daily Commercial.

A 15-member team operated on Hope Hill for nine hours. Ms. Hill received large and small intestines, a stomach, a pancreas and a liver — an operation only about 20 people receive per year, according to the report.

The operation was led by Rodrigo Vianna, MD, director of Miami Transplant Institute, and Thiago Beduschi, MD, associate associate professor of surgery and director of the Living Donor Liver Transplant Program.

Ms. Hill has received multiple surgeries over the course of her life to correct "improperly placed intestines at birth and extreme eyesight problems," according to the Daily Commercial. The health issues are attributed to Ms. Hill's albino condition. In 2015, Ms. Hill was diagnosed with an uncommon intestinal pseudo obstruction that led to an 18-hour operation. Two weeks later, she was placed on life support after contracting sepsis. In 2016 she was placed on the organ transplant list.

Dr. Vianna indicated Ms. Hill will be able to do strenuous activities in about a year, according Daily Commercial.
