A hospital spokeswoman said a pipe was improperly attached to the wrong drain since June 2010, when the hospital installed a new air conditioning unit. The improper piping caused the green dye to flow into the storm water system, rather than the sanitary sewer system.
Local HAZMAT officials said the green dye is non-toxic and biodegradable. The notice of violation means the hospital has 30 days to repair the piping.
