Massachusetts Report Cards Reveal High SSI Rates After Vaginal Hysterectomies

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health will publish healthcare quality report cards for more than 70 hospitals that indicate women in the state experience twice as many surgical site infections after vaginal hysterectomies than national rates, according to a Boston Globe report.

The hospital report cards detail surgical site infections for a variety of procedures, including hip and knee replacement, coronary artery bypass surgery and vaginal and abdominal hysterectomy. The state also collects data on central line-associated bloodstream infections.

Aside from surgical site infections after vaginal hysterectomies, infection rates were similar to or lower than national averages. In addition, Massachusetts hospitals reported 199 total central line-associated infections in 2011, down 24 percent from last year.

The department is expected to publish the report cards online today.
