The Leapfrog Group announced the spring 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade update April 24. For the update, the organization ranked all 50 states based on the number of “A” hospitals compared to the total number of graded hospitals. The list is updated every six months — once in the spring and again in the fall.
Here are the top 10 states with the highest proportion of “A”-rated hospitals.
- Hawaii — 72.73 percent
- Idaho — 70 percent
- Rhode Island — 62.5 percent
- Massachusetts — 53.57 percent
- Virginia — 51.67 percent
- Colorado — 47.22 percent
- Maine — 42.86 percent
- Ohio — 42.45 percent
- North Carolina — 41.89 percent
- Wisconsin — 41.51 percent
Here are the 10 states with the lowest proportion of “A”-rated hospitals.
- North Dakota — 0 percent
- Delaware — 0 percent
- Alaska — 0 percent
- New York — 5.84 percent
- Maryland — 7.32 percent
- Connecticut — 8.33 percent
- West Virginia — 9.09 percent
- Arkansas — 12 percent
- Nebraska — 12.5 percent
- Alabama — 15.22 percent
