Joint Commission offers advanced certification for high-quality hip, knee replacements

To help hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers improve the quality, consistency and safety of their total hip and total knee replacements, the Joint Commission is offering an advanced certification for the procedures.

The program will focus on the following areas:

  • Transitioning patients through the continuum of care, from the orthopedic consultation through and postoperative follow-up visits
  • Educating providers on the patient throughout the perioperative episode, including comorbid assessments, risk factors, postoperative rehabilitation and discharge planning
  • Including patients in shared decision-making
  • Standardizing communication and collaboration between providers involved in the patient’s care

Because the advanced certification program recognizes an organization’s commitment to provide care in a safe and efficient manner for their patients, it will “give providers an unparalleled advantage when it comes to providing coordinated and comprehensive care to patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement,” said Wendi Roberts, RN, executive director of certification for The Joint Commission.

To qualify for the certification program, an organization must have achieved Joint Commission Hospital, Critical Access Hospital or Ambulatory Care Accreditation as well as the general eligibility requirements of Joint Commission Disease-Specific Certification.

Organizations interested in participating in the program may request an application by emailing certification@jointcommission.org or calling 630-792-5291.
