The Joint Commission, a healthcare accreditation organization, debuted a Responsible Use of AI in Healthcare certification June 1.
The accreditor developed the certification after convening more than 20 “coalitions and groups with expertise in both healthcare and technology,” according to a commission news release.
The voluntary certification will recognize U.S. hospitals and health systems that possess governance, safeguards, monitoring processes and education on responsibly using AI in healthcare settings. The certification does not validate or certify AI products; rather, it assesses ethical and safe AI uses, including standards on risk and bias reduction.
“At its core, [the certification] recognizes that responsible AI use is not only a technology issue — it is a patient safety, quality, governance, privacy and trust issue,” the release said.
In March, the American Medical Association reported 81% of 1,342 surveyed physicians use AI in clinical practice, an increase from the 66% who said the same in 2024 and 38% in 2023. Jonathan Perlin, MD, PhD, president and CEO of the Joint Commission, cited this 81% figure, saying, “There is a fast-growing need for universal standards for implementing this transformational technology in responsible ways.”
The Coalition for Health AI, which has collaborated with the commission on guidance for responsible AI in healthcare, applauded the certification.
“We believe this alignment will greatly reduce confusion and help to accelerate rapid and responsible adoption of AI in healthcare,” said Brian Anderson, MD, CEO of CHAI.
