Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health is warning of a potential measles exposure at Geisinger Medical Center after a visitor suspected of having the disease passed through several areas of the hospital.
The possible exposure occurred between 1 p.m. Aug. 12 and 9 p.m. Aug. 13, the health system said Aug. 16. Affected areas included the emergency department and pediatric emergency department waiting rooms, the second floor of Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville, the main atrium and fluoroscopy.
Geisinger urged anyone who was in those areas during that window to watch for symptoms and to call ahead before visiting a medical facility. People born before 1957, those who have had measles and those who have received two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine are considered at low risk. Unvaccinated and immunocompromised people face greater risk, the system said.
The alert comes during the worst U.S. measles year in decades. The CDC had confirmed more than 2,560 cases nationwide as of mid-August — surpassing 2025’s full-year total and the most since the disease was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000. Nearly all cases have occurred among unvaccinated or under-vaccinated people.
