The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis is attempting to create its own vaccine committee to replace the dissolved Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, NBC News reported June 22.
Here is what to know:
1. HHS’ termination of all 17 members of the CDC’s ACIP has prompted concern from several healthcare organizations. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has since named eight new members to the panel. Several new committee members have previously shared anti-vaccine rhetoric or made unfounded claims about vaccines, according to CNBC.
2. Several medical organizations are looking to form their own group to replace ACIP.
3. CIDRAP is launching the Vaccine Integrity Project as a possible alternative to ACIP. The project is led by Michael Osterholm, PhD, an infectious disease expert and the center’s director.
4. CIDRAP is consulting with medical organizations and insurance providers to discuss vaccine recommendations. Those organizations include the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the American Pharmacists Association, and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.
