More states are reporting measles outbreaks ahead of flu season.

Here’s what to know:

1. As of Sept. 30, the CDC has reported 1,555 measles cases — the highest number of annual cases since the U.S. declared measles was eliminated in 2000. Of those, 1,523 were reported by 40 states.

2. There have been 42 outbreaks reported in 2025, and 86% of confirmed cases are outbreak-associated. In 2024, there were 16 outbreaks.

3. The most recent outbreaks have been reported in Minnesota and South Carolina.

4. Of those who contracted measles this year, 92% were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status. Children ages 5 to 19 made up 39% of cases, followed by those over 20 years old at 33% and children under 5 at 27%.

5. States are grappling with measles cases and outbreaks just months ahead of the respiratory virus season. Currently, however, viral infections remain low across all states.
